"Today, all packs of wild Mexican grays trace their roots back to the Wild Canid Survival and Research Center." - Susan Lyndaker Lindsey, chief |
There were many short term changes because of Marlin Perkins’ stand.
Intellectually, more people were educated about how they could make a difference in the lives of animals. People would write letters to both Marlin and Carol to show their support. Economically, the television audience who watched “Wild Kingdom” donated money to animal conservation programs and zoos. Mutual of Omaha gained more customers because of their sponsorship of this program (Meier, “Basic Orientation Information”) which made their profits grow into the billions of dollars (Kovalchik). Environmentally, Marlin and Carol Perkins would travel around the United States to give speeches about their experiences in Africa. Along with Marlin Perkins, Carol Perkins worked in Missouri to help establish a sanctuary for wolves in St. Louis County, assisted by an international board of scientists involved in saving this animal from extinction (“Program”). |
